Northern lights husky visit - Gargia Lodge

Experience an authentic evening in the Arctic wilderness, just 30 minutes from Alta city centre, where Arctic nature, history and huskies come together beneath the Northern Lights. The experience begins with transport from Alta to Gargia Lodge, a historic mountain lodge located at the gateway to the vast Finnmarksvidda plateau.

Here you will meet our kennel of around 40 huskies – energetic and friendly Arctic dogs that love attention. Our guides will introduce you to the history of dog sledding, life with huskies, and how a sled dog team works. You will meet and greet the dogs, take photos, and experience the special connection between people and these remarkable animals.

After visiting the kennel, we move into the warm and atmospheric gamme, a traditional Sámi-style hut, where food is served around the open fire.

The main course is a traditional Arctic stew, inspired by the meals once served along the historic travel routes across Finnmark. During dinner, your guide will share stories about the old postal routes between Alta and the inland areas, which from the 1700s helped secure communication between Europe and the northern regions—often across demanding winter landscapes and harsh weather.

As the evening grows darker, we step outside into the quiet surroundings of the lodge. If the Northern Lights appear, you may witness one of nature’s most spectacular phenomena—green and purple ribbons of light dancing across the Arctic sky, far away from the city lights.
